Say hello to Donald! Donald joined us in February 2021 as our first Regional Director on the Brand Sales team. When he started his #FiveStarCareer journey two years ago, he helped launch Yelp’s Brand Sales Business, and today he is sharing an inside look at his journey and where the Brand Sales team is heading.

Tell us about your journey at Yelp

Yelp’s Brand Sales team focuses on selling our first-party data to non-brick-and-mortar advertisers. Before joining Yelp, I worked in various leadership positions selling intent data and have found it to be rewarding to apply that knowledge and see success in my current role.

How did you know you wanted to pursue a job in sales?

I was told from a young age that I should get into sales. I’ve always been outgoing, and from the very start, I loved the art of prospecting, meeting, and closing business. The idea that I could earn money based on the amount of effort I put in has always been one of my biggest motivators. As I’ve evolved in my sales career, I have learned that I not only am excited by the prospects of winning a new business but also by helping customers solve their problems.

What is your advice to someone interested in sales?

Sales is fun, but it also requires discipline. You have to learn from the no’s and stay confident, even in the face of rejection. The sale really starts after you win a deal because you want to ensure you retain and grow your business. Both are an art that you continue to craft throughout your career.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

I manage a team of nine sellers, so my day is typically full of various meetings and tasks, such as pitching our Yelp Audience products to a brand, having strategy sessions with my team, or working on wrap-ups that need to be finalized. It’s fun putting all of the pieces together to help achieve our quotas.

How do you stay motivated to hit your goals when you’re having a tough day?

For me, tough days are few and far between. However, when I do come across a more challenging day or task, I remind myself that I can take a break and come back to it. I work with good people, and we find a way to solve any problem.

How does Yelp support your work-life balance?

Yelp has been very supportive of my efforts to train and compete in an Ironman. I can exceed both my work and personal goals, and Yelp makes me feel energized to do both.
